Indianapolis, a City of Monuments and the Indianapolis 500

Indianapolis is the capital of the state of Indiana in the United States. This city, about three quarters of a million inhabitants, is one of the largest cities in the country. The city is known about the large number of all types of sports competitions and races staged in the city. It also has the largest number of monuments in the country, apart from Washington, DC.

Originally, the city, located on the White River, was an industrial city that was dedicated to the manufacture of automobiles and textiles. However, in recent years the city has benefited from tourism, mostly due to the increase of tourists for the many exhibitions, conferences, meetings and sports activities organized in this city.

The Memorial to the Indiana Soldiers and Sailors Monument is located in the Circle, and is a great monument of more than 87.15 meters. The Monument to the Soldiers and Sailors of Indiana is a neoclassical monument of stone and bronze, which was built in memory of veterans of the revolution. Every Christmas, the entire center is filled with lights, and the Monument to the Soldiers and Sailors is decorated like a Christmas tree. This monument is located in the center of the city, and here is usually held the most important events in the region. Here are a number of art exhibitions with the theme of the Indianapolis 500, the famous old competition cars. Each June, takes place here, an event related to the Formula 1 Grand Prix Concourse Chrysler.

At the base of huge symbolic monument are several sources and the Museum of Colonel Eli Lilly Civil War. In this museum you will find a collection of weapons, items and historical documents on the Civil War and the state of Indiana. In this museum may also go to the observatory, where you can enjoy the magnificent views of the city, though you will have to climb the 331 steps that go to the top.

At first, the Monument Circle was designed as the Circle of the Governors. Now, the sides of the circle are decorated with statues of four military leaders of the most important Civil War. The bronze statues are from Clark, Harrison, Whitcomb and Morton.

Near the center of town are many shops, museums and cafes. And there is Chocolate Factory in South Bend. In the cultural scene, highlights the Hilbert Circle Theatre and the Madame Walker Theatre Center, Indianapolis Symphony Orchestra and the Columbia Club, one of the most exclusive clubs and old town. Christ Church Cathedral is one of the most beautiful cathedrals, like the Scottish Rite Cathedral. Other sites that stand out in this city are the Crown Hill Cemetery, the Museum House of James Whitcomb Riley, and squares of Lockerbie and Obelisk.

Indianapolis Union Station was the first station of its kind in the world, and was inaugurated in 1853. Since 1982, the season is considered a site of national and historical value. Today, the old station is full of several hotels, a museum and headquarters for several companies.

The sports landscape is also very important in this city. The 500 Festival, held each May for a month, and ending just before the start of the Indianapolis 500 race.

In this city there are a lot of parks. Every summer, the parks are filled with concerts and music festivals. The Indy Jazz Fest is held in Military Park. In the Conner Prairie Historical Park, the Symphony Orchestra hosts a series of summer concerts. And it was also held many art fairs, theater and film, as the Broad Ripple Art Fair or Festival of the Arts in Caramel, or the Penrod Art Fair. The most curious is the Indy International Wine Competition held at the Indiana State Fairgrounds, and also held many exhibitions of beer and various cultural fairs.
