Montevideo: Walk Through the Old City

Montevideo travelWe continue with our tour of Montevideo, we started in our previous article. Continuing our tour of the Old Town Square are the Constitution that states in the center of the Fountain of the Angels.

Independence Square
Plaza surrounding this important buildings designed by that is considered the first Uruguayan architect Don Tomás Toribio. They are the Cathedral, inspired by guidelines of the Late Neo-Renaissance and neo-Renaissance Town Council held in Toscano. Finally, and following in the Old Town area, we can highlight two works of architect Zucchi. They include the Teatro Solis and the Independence Square. Located at the inception of the Avenida 18 de Julio, the place geographically separated urban contemporary old Montevideo.

Independence Square is surrounded by buildings and monuments that synthesize the heart of the city. Proof of this are: the Monument to General José Artigas, the work of artist Angelo Zanelli. Beneath it is the mausoleum where his remains. It is worth mentioning too: the Palacio Salvo, a symbol of Montevideo, which was built by architect Palanti, the same who made the Palacio Barolo in Buenos Aires. It also highlights the “Gate of the Citadel, the remains of the castle and the Palace Estevez, which until not long ago the Government House.

Without doubt the city’s attractions do not end here. It is worth mentioning that pays his beautiful Rambla de la Plata River, the neighborhood of Pocitos, or Parque Rodo where the mythical Estadio Centenario. But this is a matter for the next chapter of Montevideo.
