A Treasure Trove of Stone: the Machu Picchu

A Treasure Trove of Stone, the Machu PicchuMachu Picchu in its origin was an ancient Inca citadel built by the fifteenth century, at 2,200 feet above the top of the hill that gives rise to its name in the Urubamba Valley in southern Peru. Machu Picchu is considered an architectural and archaeological. In fact, the July 7, 2007, was chosen as one of the new wonders of the world, along with other buildings at a ceremony held in the capital of Portugal.

It is not known exactly what the role of Machu Picchu was. There are several hypotheses: maybe it was the holiday residence of the Inca emperor Pachacutec, or perhaps it was built as a mausoleum for the emperor. It also could have been a military fortress or a religious shrine. However, the strongest theory holds that it was a settlement built to monitor the economy of the conquered areas and for the purpose of sheltering the emperor and his entourage in case of attack. Machu Picchu (Quechua word meaning old mountain) is located 130 kilometers northwest of Cuzco, a 3 hour train ride from the city, 3 days walking the Inca Trail or by helicopter on a journey of 30 minutes.

The citadel has two areas one setting, with sidewalks and food storage enclosures and other urban areas where stands the sacred area with temples, squares and royal tombs elaborate. The stairways and canals of this sacred area is a constant in this location.

The journey begins at a trail access to the agricultural area of Machu Picchu. First are a series of structures called Cash or Colcas and a group of platforms for agriculture. These are far from other urban groups and were built in stages in order to store agricultural surpluses and the residence of guardians and farmers. From the viewpoint and the top of the agricultural area can admire the harmonious beauty of the citadel and its natural environment. Nearby is the main entrance to Machu Picchu which results in the defensive wall and dry moat. The buildings are divided into the upper quarter or Hanan and the slum or Hurin. Hanan is in the Temple of the Sun, a palace and a monument called Intihuatana which is not exactly known function, as it can be an astronomical observatory, an altar or a sundial, among the Hanan and Hurin stairways connecting with existing neighborhoods.

One of the most important parts of Machu Picchu is Temple Square, where two major temples. Stresses the Temple of the Three Windows located east of the plaza, among other buildings.

One of the most beautiful times to visit Machu Picchu, you get to see if the visitor accesses the young mountain through a stairway. The visitor must mop up the steps carved out of solid stone of the mountain to reach the top. Once up, from a height of 2,720 meters, the view is spectacular: the entire Machu Picchu at the feet of tourists.

If you want to live a different adventure, Machu Picchu is your destiny!

The Northern Lights in Iceland

The Northern Lights in IcelandWithout doubt one of the images are burned into the retina of any person is that of the aurora borealis. For those who do not know, the aurora is a phenomenon that occurs in the skies of the Scandinavian countries from September. This is a spectacular multi-colored glow appears in the Icelandic sky at this time.

I explain the phenomenon of the aurora borealis as it occurs exactly at this time, but the sky in Iceland is a show all year. In summer, between June and July, we also witness another phenomenon called the midnight sun and in the countries located in this part of the hemisphere at that time enjoying the sun-clock.

Undoubtedly, these two weather phenomena that occur in different seasons are the main attractions of Iceland. And the truth is that strongly deserves the trouble to visit this country just to save a snapshot camera on your journal.

But Iceland does not stop there. It is true that this is a fairly small country; its capital is Reykjavik and is home to nearly half the population of Iceland. But nevertheless it is an underdeveloped country, on the contrary, the capital is at the level of other European capitals, and perfectly knows how to use their main attraction is its environment and landscape.

Whale watching is one of the unique things you can do if you decide to go to Iceland. During spring through fall hundreds of whales of all species are close to the Icelandic coast, so that tourists can enjoy watching these wild animals.

But certainly what I like about Iceland is called Blue Lagoon, a natural spa. In my opinion the most beautiful and impressive of Iceland, which for its beauty and importance will dedicate one of our post on wellness tourism.
